'1124' Cufflinks Honour Scotland's Sovereign David I
Scottish Craftsmen Work Together to Create New Exclusive Design
Thistle & Broom brings the extraordinary skills of British goldsmith Malcolm Appleby and lapidary Renato Forno in creating limited edition cufflinks of precious metals and Scottish agates.
/Jewelry PR News/ - EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND, March 30, 2007 - Edinburgh and New York - Thistle & Broom today announced the completion of a new pair of exclusive cufflinks created by silver/goldsmith Malcolm Appleby and lapidary Renato Forno. The '1124' cufflinks will make their first North American public appearance as part of VisitScotland's Scottish Village.
Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim, David I 1124 - 24 May 1153 (whose great grandfather was murdered by Mac Bethd, same of Shakespeare's MacBeth) produced the first royal coinage issued in Scotland and under his efforts the kingdom of Scotland was established. The reverse of this coinage features a cross for 'resolution' and four pellets - rounds - meaning 'worthy of trust or treasure'.
"Renato locates his stones in muddy fields, on mountains and on beaches across Scotland, he then cuts and hand polishes them to absolute perfection. From a design perspective he gave me something extraordinary from which to work," said Malcolm Appleby from his studio in Perthshire.
Back in Fife after taping his appearance on The Weakest Link (UK) where he wore the first pair of the '1124' cufflinks, Renato praised Appleby's efforts, "Malcolm created the perfect setting for my stones with an implied St. Andrew's Cross and four roundels. Working against his international reputation and exacting standards has stretched me to continue my best efforts for Thistle & Broom."
"With commissions in private collections around the world, in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Scotland and the Royal Armoury it's such a privilege to be able to offer Malcolm's work through Thistle & Broom. Renato's efforts, while not as well known, are executed with such passion it is difficult not to want to touch the stones constantly. The resulting cufflinks of their collaborative efforts exceed my expectations. As they are made of Edinburgh hallmarked sterling or 18kt gold are very likely to become tomorrow's heirlooms," said Teresa Fritschi managing director of Thistle & Broom. "Whilst all men (and probably more than a few women) will appreciate '1124' it is probably an understatement to say these will appeal enormously to 14 million Americans claiming Scottish heritage who might like to own a piece of the Earth of their forefathers."
A limited number of pairs of '1124' will be available for use by the media and for the general public for purchase or special ordering during Tartan Week NY 31 March through April 8.
